hookworm in a kitten.?
Okay, I had 2 kittens, they were both a month old,
Like 2 days after they turned a month old, we found one dead.
just before it died, it pooped. I know kittens that young don’t have bowl movements.
and then a couple days later, we found the other kitten dead.
it also had pooped.
We thought it was worms, but we wern’t sure which kind.
or where they came from.
Then like a month later, my Cocker Spaniel came down with Hookworm.
So we traced the hook worm all the way back to the dad of the kittens.
We think the boy cat gave them to the girl cat, who passed them on to her kittens, which is how our dog got them.
Will Hookworm make a cat loose fur?? Because the mother of the kittens lost half of her fur after she had the kittens.
And is it possible for Hookworm to travel from a cat to another cat then to kittens, then to a dog??
I also had to bust my dog for eating cat poop in the yard that we missed, when we cleaned the yard. this is only the 1st time though.
No hookworms will not make a cat loose fur.Or a dog will not get a hook worm for a cat unless it one its its poop other than that no.
Hookworms have a direct life cycle meaning that they do not necessarily need a host to be transmitted. In pets, hookworm ova(egg) are passed in the host’s feces and develop to the first larval stage if the temperature and humidity are adequate. Ova can hatch in 10-12 hours at 30 degrees centigrade and in 9 hours at 37 degrees centigrade. Infection can occur via ingestion or skin penetration(commonly infested thru the feet) followed by a pulmonary migration, a developmental stage in the gastric glands, or an arrested state in the muscular tissue in older animals. Migration and maturation occur in 17 days. Transport hosts, especially rodents, may play a role in the transmission of this parasite.
Clinical signs may be one or more of the following:
1. Intestinal blood loss causing anemia
2. Bloody diarrhea
3. Weight loss
4. Poor hair coat
Young dogs and cats are affected more severely, since they are less able to cope with depleted iron reserves. In Utero: Inc, worm eggs can be passed on from mother to her unborn kittens via the placenta. It hasn’t been established if this is the case with feline hookworms yet.
Via the mother’s milk: Again, in dogs it is possible for hookworm infection to be passed to her puppies via the breastmilk. When a dog becomes infected with hookworms most of them migrate to the small intestine. However, some enter other tissues of the body, becoming dormant for years. When the animal becomes pregnant, they migrate to the mammary glands & are passed through the milk. It hasn’t been established if this is the case with feline hookworms yet.
How do cats become infected with hookworms?
Via the skin: Hookworm eggs are passed in the cat’s stool. Depending on conditions, within 2 – 5 days these eggs hatch into larvae (immature worms), which are present in the moist environment of soil, & vegetation. When a cat comes into contact with an environment infected with hookworm larvae, it either becomes infected via ingestion of the larvae, or they enter the body by burrowing into the skin.
Via ingestion: Hookworm larvae can contaminate food & water which the cat consumes.
