Guide dogs for the blind – how does their owner deal with this situation?
My boss just asked me this and now I’m totally intrigued!
If a blind person is out walking their guide dog how do they know when it’s done it’s business in order to pick it up?

Guides are on a very strict schedule. They are fed, relieved and exercised at regular intervals. The only time a Guide may possibly relieve in work mode is if the Guide is ill or a schedule change has taken place.
If on the off chance the Guide has to relieve outside of schedule, the handler will notice subtle changes in the Guides behavior. This tells the handler that the dog needs to relieve. The handler will then go to an out of the way place to relieve their dog.
When a Guide is relieving, it takes a certain “stance”, and the stance is different for urination and defecation. When urinating, the dog will either squat (males and females) or lift the rear leg (usually males, although some females will lift the leg on rare occasions). There is nothing to “pick up” for urination. For defecation, the dog will arch its back, and the handler can then run their hand down the dogs back when the dog is finished to find the “deposit’. With a dog waste bag on the hand (fits like a glove), it is then a simple matter of scooping it up and turning the bag inside-out and tying it at the top. Then it goes in the nearest trash can.
This is all part of the training that the blind person receives when they go to the Guide school to get their dog. It is usually a 28 day residential program where the person learns how to care for, use, and safely travel with their Guide.
