My dog is a licker and it seems abnormal to me…?
The dog in question is a 4-yr-old, neutered, 1/2 Rott, half Aussie with a clean bill of health.
When I say he licks, I mean he licks EVERYTHING… himself, the other dogs and cats, my husband and I, the couch, the coffee table, the floor, the windows, the bars of his crate…
My question is whether or not this is ok (seems a little obsessive to me) and if it could be a sign of dietary or other problems?
It doesn’t really bother me otherwise so I’m not worried about trying to get him to stop… unless the rest of you overwhelmingly believe this is a behavior I should put an end to?

Try an experiment:
For the next 3 – 5 days, take him for a 30 min. walk or jog, twice a day, if possible…. and maybe a 10 -15 min. walk before his bedtime.
He may not stop licking, but see if he licks noticeably less. If he does, then he is trying to burn off nervous energy by licking, rather than chewing or digging.
See if you can get him some hard rubber toys, maybe a rubber bone or a few Kongs. If those help, you may notice that he becomes even sweeter and more laid back.
My theory: A Rott is a very strong dog that needs lots of heavy exercise to wear him out. But they get hot quickly, so sometimes they get too hot, before they get tired.
Aussie are very intelligent, working dogs that need a job… the jogging may be enough.
