bloat advice……………………………….?

ive read do not raise food and raise food, people with dogs who suffer from this whats ur advice?

There has been as many switches in the thinking about this as I have fresh socks! Some articles you read say raise bowls, while others say don’t. I have Bassets, a bloat-prone breed. Obviously there’s no way I can raise their bowls!! However, I do raise my Whippet’s bowls – but more because I think it’s kinder than to see her trying to get down to her food to be honest.

I know there was a lot of research into this awful condition done by the Liverpool Uni. some years ago now, but I didn’t see they came to any definitive conclusions on the whys. There was some research done in the Bloodhound breed which suggested a familial link. Some affected bloodlines were found to have smaller sphincter muscles, which went into spasm more easily. But obviously this sort of research has to be done after death, so again, it’s questionable info. There may be something in it however, as I do know of quite a lot of cases in certain bloodlines in my own breed.

I thought I had a handle on this after I had 3 cases, all in elderly less active males. The first two were ‘classic’ in that they blew in the late evening, after their last meal of the day. Then the next blew in the morning, very soon after his breakfast. The final one (I hope) threw it all out by blowing at 7 am, before his breakfast/exercise. And he was only 8, fit, healthy and never any sign of gas whatsoever. Our first one was 11, and survived to live to 14 before he died (not of bloat). The second was 11, but always a sickly boy. We elected to let him go (with our vet) as it was unlikely he’d survive. The third was almost 14, and didn’t make it to the vet despite our getting him there in 15 minutes. The last one was on the table within 15 minutes, had to have his ruptured spleen removed, and back home that evening. He lived to be in his 15th year, and never had another episode. One and two were not directly related to any of the others, three and four were grandsire and grandson.

I’d continue to raise her dish (and split her food into two meals a day). But keep an eye on current information on this dread condition, which I hope you never have to experience!

Add – I’ve never entertained the idea of ‘prevention surgery’ to be honest. Putting a dog under a g/a has it’s own risks and although pinning the stomach should prevent a full torsion, there are no guarantees!
