Dog that was just spayed, dragging butt?
My dog was just spayed Monday. Everything went great. Today she’s started dragging her butt on the ground outside. I’ve checked her stools, and no sign of tapeworms(which we dealt with a long time ago with a cat,so I know what to look for) why is she doing this? Could this be some sort of complication of the spay? Twice today she has been walking, and then she just stops and yelps like you stepped on her paw, but nobody did. Lasts about 3 seconds, then she’s fine and starts walking again. Should I call the after hours clinic, or is there a reason for this?
So, why would her bum be itching from her spay? She doesnt even have the traditional 5 inch scar. She had a laproscopic (sp?) spay, one little hole in the middle of her belly. I guess I will call then.
She does not have fleas. She is on Frontline.
Dogs drag their bottoms on the ground because their anal glands are impacted. The most common reason is because their stools are soft and aren’t hard enough to express the glands themselves. Worms and other intestinal issues are a common cause of soft stools. That’s why people suggest looking for worms, but your tell-tale sign is soft stool, not necessarily worms.
Ask your vet or groomer to express the glands for your dog and either switch her food or have her on a temporary bland diet. You could also add anything with fiber, such as canned (not sweetened) pumpkin or even oatmeal.
ETA: Many dogs have loose stools after surgeries. I say put her on the bland diet and wait a few days before calling the vet.
