My dog is scared of thunder and fireworks..?

We have an 11 year old American Eskimo who is an outdoor dog, and seems to be afraid of thunder or fireworks.. We noticed it first this past Fourth of July.. ***We’ve had her since she was a puppy, never an issue*** now, when she hears the fireworks, she jumps the fence, or gate to get out.. same thing last night, loud thunder and she pounced over the fence, dont know how, but she did.. anything we can do?
btw: we have two dogs. two year old Terrier and 11 year old American Eskimo.

Unfortunately, as dogs age, they can begin to have phobias that they never had before. It might be that her hearing is not as good as it once was, and so loud noises are more scary now. At any rate, you might want to talk to your vet about some medication to help with that anxiety. There are some really good, safe medications out there that do not cause a lot of sedation, that can provide at least some comfort to your dog. 4th of July is really hard on a lot of dogs, and at least you might be able to prevent the fear from really getting too bad, since you know when the fireworks are likely to be going off.

good luck
