Can dogs get jealous of children?
If you spend time with your children, can your dog get jealous?
Dogs don’t exactly get jealous. If they aren’t properly integrated as dogs into the home, they can get ideas above their station, which looks to humans very much like jealousy but is actually potentially more dangerous.
If a dog doesn’t accept your authority absolutely, then it may not accept that you alone are responsible for raising your child and start taking responsibility itself, which may result in it snapping at the child or worse.
A mild reaction would be to put itself between you and the child whenever you’re interacting with the child. This too needs correcting; the dog needs to learn that it doesn’t have the elevated status that gives it more right to attention than the child.
The solution is normally to make sure that behaving properly around the child has positive consequences for the dog: this might take the form of a treat or simply loving attention from you whenever it behaves well around your children. And children need to be taught how to behave properly around the dog (not tease it, not demand attention from it when it doesn’t want to play, etc.).
